Contabo was founded in 2003 in Munich as Giga-International by Michael Bölke and Michael Herpich. In its first years, the company ran hosting from a single server under a straightforward premise: reliable German infrastructure at prices that developers and small businesses could justify. That price-first positioning has stayed consistent across two decades.

The first own data center opened in Munich in 2009, followed by a second, larger facility in Nuremberg in 2014. Operations expanded beyond Germany starting in 2020, and Contabo now runs twelve data centers across nine regions, including Munich, Nuremberg, a central European hub near the French-German border, Portsmouth in the UK, three US locations (New York, Seattle, St. Louis), Singapore, Tokyo, Sydney, and Mumbai. The 2013 rebrand from Giga-International to Contabo, short for "Content Across Borders", signaled the shift from regional German host to global provider.

In 2022, the company transitioned into private-equity ownership. The aggressive global expansion since then, along with the core pricing strategy, reflects that shift: Contabo scales by standardizing hardware and processes across every location. Each data center runs the same AMD EPYC-based server blueprints, including the latest EPYC generation, paired with NVMe storage. That uniformity is how the company keeps prices low: bulk purchasing, simplified spare parts logistics, and consistent operations across continents.

The product split follows this logic. Cloud VPS plans use shared CPU cores for the lowest entry prices. Virtual Dedicated Servers allocate physical cores and RAM exclusively to one customer. Dedicated Servers offer the full bare-metal experience with custom RAID configurations. Object Storage is available as an S3-compatible service. For Contabo users, the trade-off is clear: generous resources and low prices in exchange for a self-service operating model and performance that scales with how hard the shared infrastructure is pushed.
