Hands-on experience
First-hand experience from setting up and using Contabo for a personal project — not a synthetic case study.
Context: Evaluating Contabo VPS plus Object Storage for a personal project.
Setup: Ordered a VPS through the standard checkout. Server was provisioned and SSH-accessible within minutes. Added Object Storage as an additional service from the same account.
Outcome: The VPS itself was immediately usable. Connecting Object Storage worked, but the configuration options were placed deep inside the control panel and took some searching to find. The login experience also felt visually and structurally different from the main customer dashboard — a small sign that the platform is still consolidating its UX.
Takeaway: For straightforward VPS use, Contabo delivers on its main promise: fast provisioning, immediate access, low price. The trade-off shows up in the periphery: secondary services and UI polish haven't caught up with the core product yet. Not a dealbreaker for developers who are comfortable navigating configuration screens, but something to be aware of before switching from a more polished platform.
Contabo Pros and Cons
Pros
- Significantly more RAM and storage per euro than most competitors
- Fast VPS provisioning — servers typically accessible within minutes
- Twelve locations across nine global regions
- Consistent AMD EPYC hardware platform across all data centers
- S3-compatible Object Storage as an add-on
- No long-term commitment required on most VPS plans
Cons
- Shared CPU cores on VPS plans — performance varies with host load
- UX inconsistencies between the login flow and the main dashboard
- Secondary features like Object Storage are buried in the configuration UI
- Support response times on complex tickets can be longer than on sales inquiries
- Not an SLA-backed service — uptime is reported rather than contractually guaranteed

4 AngeboteWhen another provider fits better
Contabo is not the right fit for every workload. Depending on priorities — performance, support, or platform simplicity — the following providers may be stronger options.
Hetzner
Higher raw performance per core and faster provisioning.
Best for: Workloads that are CPU-bound or latency-sensitive, and when EU-only data residency is acceptable. Hetzner Cloud is often picked by developers who previously ran on Contabo but outgrew the shared-core model.
IONOS
Managed onboarding and 24/7 phone support.
Best for: Users who want hand-holding during setup, structured support channels, and a traditional provider relationship. Lower technical threshold than Contabo or Hetzner.
Hostinger
WordPress-optimized stack with AI-assisted tooling.
Best for: Content sites, blogs, or small e-commerce projects where the stack is predictable and single-core responsiveness matters more than raw resource volume.
About Contabo
Contabo was founded in 2003 in Munich as Giga-International by Michael Bölke and Michael Herpich. In its first years, the company ran hosting from a single server under a straightforward premise: reliable German infrastructure at prices that developers and small businesses could justify. That price-first positioning has stayed consistent across two decades.
The first own data center opened in Munich in 2009, followed by a second, larger facility in Nuremberg in 2014. Operations expanded beyond Germany starting in 2020, and Contabo now runs twelve data centers across nine regions, including Munich, Nuremberg, a central European hub near the French-German border, Portsmouth in the UK, three US locations (New York, Seattle, St. Louis), Singapore, Tokyo, Sydney, and Mumbai. The 2013 rebrand from Giga-International to Contabo, short for "Content Across Borders", signaled the shift from regional German host to global provider.
In 2022, the company transitioned into private-equity ownership. The aggressive global expansion since then, along with the core pricing strategy, reflects that shift: Contabo scales by standardizing hardware and processes across every location. Each data center runs the same AMD EPYC-based server blueprints, including the latest EPYC generation, paired with NVMe storage. That uniformity is how the company keeps prices low: bulk purchasing, simplified spare parts logistics, and consistent operations across continents.
The product split follows this logic. Cloud VPS plans use shared CPU cores for the lowest entry prices. Virtual Dedicated Servers allocate physical cores and RAM exclusively to one customer. Dedicated Servers offer the full bare-metal experience with custom RAID configurations. Object Storage is available as an S3-compatible service. For Contabo users, the trade-off is clear: generous resources and low prices in exchange for a self-service operating model and performance that scales with how hard the shared infrastructure is pushed.
